How to Download & Play Soulframe (Windows PC, 2026)

By Guides Team·5 min read·Updated Nov 2026·Category: Getting started

Soulframe is the free-to-play fantasy action RPG from Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe. Since November 6, 2026, the game's "Open Preludes" Alpha is free and open to everyone on PC — the old invitation system is gone.

Here's the short version: Soulframe is not on Steam yet. You download it through Digital Extremes' own launcher from the official site, and it takes about five minutes to set up.

Version note: This guide reflects the Open Preludes Alpha build, open to all players as of November 6, 2026. Soulframe is in early testing, so install details and requirements can change between updates — we'll note anything version-specific.

Step-by-step: download and install

  1. Go to the official site: visit soulframe.com.
  2. Create or sign in to a free account. Signing up also reserves your Envoy name, so do this first if you care about your handle.
  3. Find the Download page. Open the Game tab and select Download (or go straight to soulframe.com/download).
  4. Download the launcher installer. It's an MSI package (x64, per-machine install) — a standard Windows installer.
  5. Run the installer and pick your install folder. It creates desktop and Start Menu shortcuts named "Soulframe."
  6. Launch the launcher and let it download the game files (the full game is ~50 GB, so a wired connection or patience helps).
  7. Sign in and play. Select Open Preludes from the launcher and you're in.

That's the whole process. The launcher is Digital Extremes' own — separate from the Warframe launcher for now — and it handles all game updates.

FAQ

Is Soulframe actually free? Yes. The Open Preludes Alpha is free to play. No invitation code or Founder pack purchase is required — Founder packs are optional paid support and do not gate access.

Why isn't it on Steam? Digital Extremes is distributing the Alpha through its own launcher first. A Steam page exists for wishlisting, but the game is not playable through Steam yet. This is common for the studio's early-access phases.

Do I need an account? Yes — a free account. You create it on soulframe.com, and signing up early also reserves your Envoy name.

Is there a console version? Not yet. Soulframe is Windows PC only during the Open Preludes Alpha; no console or full-release date has been announced.

Does the game still use invites? No. As of November 6, 2026, the invitation system has been removed and the Alpha is open to all PC players.

Can I play on Linux or Steam Deck? Unofficially, yes, through Wine/Proton. The launcher is 32-bit while the game is 64-bit, so you'll need both 32-bit and 64-bit Vulkan libraries and a recent Wine version. Expect some fiddling — it's not officially supported.
